Greetings! And welcome to Mitigation.Education, a hub for information about disaster preparedness, mitigation measures, and the experiences of those exposed to and recovering from disaster events.

This site focuses mainly on hurricanes, more specifically, those that occur along the U.S. Gulf Coast in the Atlantic hurricane basin.

In addition to highlighting past & present research relevant to Gulf Coast hurricanes, this site also explores mitigation approaches intended to diminish disaster impacts.

COMING SOON!!

Spring 2024 Class:
How to Prepare for Hazards

Course Description:

This course will begin with an explanation of hazard types and corresponding impacts – such as hurricane storm surge and flooding, tornado wind damage, and wildfire destruction. Lessons will explore what makes people, places, and property vulnerable to certain hazards, and what protections can help reduce disaster impacts. Home mitigation strategies such as “hurricane landscaping,” and preparedness methods for impacts including extended power outages will be presented. Suggested approaches will range from major or minor structural adjustments (roof reinforcement, gutter guards) to smaller-scale prep steps (such as home inventory for insurance purposes). Class members will be welcome to ask questions / share suggestions concerning hazard vulnerabilities and disaster preparations at the end of each class session.

Summer 2023 Class:
How to Prepare for Hurricane Impacts

Course Description:

This course will begin with an explanation of hurricanes and hurricane impacts – such as storm surge, wind damage, and flooding – using examples of landfalling hurricanes in Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast. Subsequent lessons will explore what makes people, places, and property vulnerable to tropical storms and hurricanes, and what protections can help residents reduce damages. Home mitigation strategies such as “hurricane landscaping,” and preparedness methods for impacts including extended power outages will be presented. Suggested approaches will range from major or minor structural adjustments (roof reinforcement, gutter guards) to smaller-scale pre-storm prep steps (such as, home inventory for insurance purposes or using your washer as an “ice chest”). Class members will be welcome to ask questions / share suggestions concerning storm vulnerabilities and home preparations at the end of each class session.
